CHIOLE PROJECT Progress

Background

The Rehabilitation of Chiole Plant in Ntcheu is one of Central Region Water Board’s key projects implemented under the Malawi 2063 Vision. Financed by CRWB internally with partial funding from the Government of Malawi. The project aims to improve water supply for Ntcheu Town by 40% by 2026. 

Beneficiaries and objective

The project benefits approximately 48,000 people within Ntcheu Town. Its objectives include ensuring short to medium term water security, achieving 24-hour water supply reliability, reaching 100% potable water coverage by 2026.

Chiole Plant Progress

KHOLONGO MULTIPURPOSE DAM PROJECT (KMDP)
Background: 
The Kholongo Multipurpose Dam Project (KMDP) is one of Malawi’s flagship infrastructure projects implemented under the Malawi 2063 Vision. Financed through a local currency bond, it is executed by the Central Region Water Board (CRWB) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development. The project aims to transform Mponela (and surrounding areas) from a township to a secondary city by providing reliable and sustainable potable water supply, irrigation, fisheries, and recreational facilities with a potential for extension to Kasungu and surrounding areas. The dam will also support industrial and environmental water demands.

Beneficiaries and Objectives: 
The project benefits approximately 191,000 people across Mponela, Madisi, Mtiti, Kawele, Kanyungu, Chimungu, and Diliro Trading Centres. Its objectives include ensuring long-term water security, achieving 24-hour water supply reliability, reaching 100% potable water coverage by 2030, and improving food security and livelihoods for about 4,436 households through irrigation and fish farming.

  • 1,507 hectares of irrigated land and 8.5 hectares of fish farms

  • Improved water supply reliability and food security for over 4,400 households
